Yesterday I celebrated my birthday. Happy Birthday to me!!
In our house, the cake is the most important part of the birthday celebration. Everyone always gets a special one decorated by yours truly. Everyone but me, that is. And this is totally by choice. Although I absolutely LOVE to decorate cakes, I don't really like eating them. So, when the hubbs asked what he should do for a cake I told him I wanted birthday brownies. I LOVE brownies!!
I was just expecting a box mix tray of brownies which would have been fine.
Instead I got this...
Look familiar?? The hubbs got all creative on me!! Threw me for a loop! He made a stencil of the girl in my logo (me) and dusted it with powdered sugar to get the design on top of the brownies.
Looks like there's more than one cake decorator in the house.
I have to admit, it did feel a bit weird cutting through what was supposed to be my face. But, once I tasted it I quickly got over it. YUM!!
What's your favorite birthday treat?

{Celebrate} Ice Cream Month!
Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month? More specifically, this coming Sunday, July 18th is National Ice Cream Day! Woo Hoo!!
What will you do to celebrate?
Yesterday I went to HomeGoods and found some really special items. I'll share those with you next week. While I was there though, I spotted this beauty.
What a book!
Check out this Italian Pistachio Gelato
and this bowl of Crushed Cherry Ice Cream.
Cherry Vanilla happens to be one of my favorites. What's yours?
This book is filled with so many wonderful ice cream photos with great recipes. I just love looking at this book!
But, in honor of National Ice Cream Day fast approaching, I'm willing to give it up...to one of you out there!!
Yes - I am having a GIVEAWAY!!
To enter, leave a comment and tell me:
What is your favorite brand and flavor of ice cream?
My current favorites are Baskin Robbins Cherries Jubilee and Chocolate Chip. VANILLA Chocolate Chip - none of that mint stuff. Eeek!! I also like hard ice cream - don't go for the soft serve version. Blah! Unless there's cherry dip on top but then I mostly just eat all the cherry dip off so I guess that doesn't really count.
OK - can't wait to hear what you like! You can vote up until Midnight on Sunday July 18th and then a winner will be randomly chosen and announced on Monday. The winner will receive this book!
Have a great weekend!
* Please make sure to provide a valid e-mail address so we can contact you if you win. E-mail addresses will not be shared or used for any other purpose other than contacting you if you win.

{Celebrate} National Sugar Cookie Day
Yes, today is National Sugar Cookie Day! Stick with me - I'll always give you a reason to celebrate!!
This one just snuck up on me so I didn't have a chance to bake anything. Instead though, I'm going to share photos I found on flickr of some amazing cookies. Hopefully they will inspire you to try your hand at decorating cookies.
Look how fun these are - and in my favorite color combination of pink & brown...

So pretty...
Love the rainbow of flowers...
These are so elegant! They would make great wedding favors...

My little one would love these...
What is your favorite type of cookie? Have you ever tried decorating your own?
If it wasn't so hot here in NYC, I would be tempted to bake, but I'm doing anything to avoid turning on the oven.
At least until September.

{Celebrate} Chocolate Day - Mango, Almond & Chocolate Crepes
Back in May, the hubs and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary. We usually go to a French restaurant since we had our honeymoon in France, but this year we decided to change things up a bit and decided on Indian instead.
We headed down to the East Village where we knew we would find a great Indian restaurant. Sure enough, we did! The food was really good and we were stuffed. We weren't ready to go home yet so we decided to look for a place in the area for dessert. We came across a crepe place called The Crooked Tree.
Since I was so full, I really could have shared one but since we couldn't agree on which one to get, we ended up with our own. The crepes were huge!! I ended up getting a crepe with mango, almonds and chocolate. Oh My Goodness!! I was in heaven! The flavor combinations were amazing! The warm, sweet, creamy chocolate, the cold fresh mango and the crunch of the sliced almonds was just a party in my mouth and I didn't want it to end. But just like all things, it did end. I ate the whole thing!!
Well, ever since that day, I've been thinking about those crepes. I just can't get them out of my mind. Turns out, today is Chocolate Day!! What do you know - a perfect excuse to try and recreate those crepes. Luckily I had everything I thought I would need. There was no way I was going out today to get ingredients. No matter how good they are! It's like a sauna here in NYC today. I am definitely happy to be indoors with my new best friend A/C.
So here goes. First you need to start out by making crepes. (not too obvious) I found a crepe recipe on the Food Network by Alton Brown. You can check there for the specifics. I used the "sweet" version.
Once you have your crepe batter made, put it in the fridge while you get the other things ready.
First step is to work on the mango.
The mango needs to be peeled and cut. There is a long flat pit going through the length of the mango. Once you peel it, you want to cut on wither side of the pit.
You can have your knife feel for where it is so you know where to cut.
Once you have that done, you want to cut the mango into strips,
then turn it the other way and cut again to dice it up.
We want a small dice here so if they come out too big, just cut the pieces a bit smaller. Set the diced mango aside in a container and keep it in the fridge to stay cold.
Next I took some sliced almonds which you can find at any store and just toasted them up a bit in a dry pan - just for a few minutes. Watch it though because you don't want it to burn.
Put that in a separate bowl until we're ready to assemble.
Now it's time to make the crepes. This may sound a bit scary to some of you but really, once you get the hang of it, you'll be fine.
You want to use a non stick pan with a little butter. You want to pour some of the batter into the center of the pan and then swirl to get it around the edges.
Don't panic if you're first one is a dud. Look at mine. Poor thing.
OK, that was our practice one. We'll do better on number 2.
Yep - looks much better. By the time I got to the 3rd one, I was on a roll.
When each crepe is done, just put it on your cutting board to cool and when the next one is ready, put the cooled one on a plate. You don't want to stack them while they are hot or they'll stick to each other.
I ended up with about a dozen good crepes. Not bad!!
Now we need some melted chocolate. I just used whatever I had on hand which happened to be semi sweet chocolate chips. You can use whatever chocolate you have as well. I just popped it in the microwave until it was all melted.
Assembly time!
Place a crepe on a plate and spread the chocolate on half the crepe.
Next up is the diced mango,
followed by a sprinkling of the almonds.
Fold it in half,
then half again.
Drizzle some extra chocolate on top,
with some more almonds,
and a dusting of powdered sugar.
What do you think?
Looks pretty good, huh?!?
Wish you were here to taste it!
Not exactly like the one at The Crooked Tree, but close enough to satisfy my urge.
How will you indulge on Chocolate Day?

{Celebrate} National Doughnut Day
Yes, yet another reason to celebrate! June is such a fun month!
The other day I told you that June is National Candy Month. You have a whole month to have fun with that one. Today though is National Doughnut Day - celebrated the first Friday of June. Normally this would be perfect timing because every Friday afternoon after school, the girls and I have a playdate with our special friends and we always end up at DD. We're usually in that place so long, the guys behind the counter start giving our kids donut holes just to keep them quiet. Today of all days, we're not having the playdate!! They're giving away free donuts if you buy a drink.
Should I take my girls anyway?
Did you get your free donut today? What's your favorite?
Went to my favorite photo site - flickr - to get some doughnut inspiration for you guys.

{Celebrate} National Candy Month
Did you know that June is National Candy Month? Yes, now you have an excuse to dive into a bowl of your favorite sugary confections.
What's your favorite candy?
How often do you indulge?
I notice I gravitate towards red or pink candies - pink cotton candy, red cherry Twizzler Nibs, red lifesavers, red and pink jelly beans, red candy apples (not the cinnamon kind). There's definitely a noticeable trend there. I wonder if there's a hidden meaning behind it. Hmmmm.
Well, I thought it would be fun to browse through flickr to see what's going on out there in the candy universe. This is what I found. Hope you like it! Credits are listed under each photograph.
